Mission
Each episode will dive into different areas and subgenres of rock, beginning with the genre's birth in the 1940s and 50s and explore both the historical and contemporary presence of Black artists in rock music. From the early pioneers like Chuck Berry and Sister Rosetta Tharpe who were central to rock’s creation and evolution, only to see their contributions underappreciated in the broader public consciousness, the series will then bridge the gap to current Black musicians who continue to challenge the genre’s boundaries, such as Lenny Kravitz, Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, and the genre-defying Bad Brains. Episodes will weave together music history, social commentary, and interviews with both emerging and established Black rock artists.
Episodes will be a mix of historical exploration, artist interviews, music analysis, and commentary from cultural critics. The show will also focus on rock's cross-cultural relationships with genres like hip-hop, funk, and soul, showing how these influences continue to shape modern music.
The podcast is designed for music lovers, history buffs, and anyone interested in social justice and cultural history.
